Miami Day 2: Little Havana
I was so excited to explore more of downtown Miami and Little Havana. We hopped on the free trolley from our hotel. We had to switch trolley's once to get to the Little Havana district. I loved this experience with our kids. I was blown away at the cultural diversity Miami has to offer. I think for the first time in my kids lives, they were the minority! There was not another person on the trolley speaking English, mostly Spanish and Creole from the Cubans and Haitians. Beckham learned what it meant for these people to be Americans and come from a different country. I loved seeing the lights go off in Brielle's mind as she remembered a book she read about a cuban family that fled their country to get away from Fidel Castro. She was excited to be in the area so many cubans came to for a better life. Since Chase and I are raising are children in a predominately white, LDS community, we know it is extremely important to open their eyes to the rest of the world and give them these experiences. I adore where we live and how beautiful it is, but it is so nice to get out of our "bubble" and meet people from all walks of life.
We rode the trolley for about 45 min before arriving in Little Havana. Our first stop was cuban food! We ate at one of local spots and ordered cuban sandwiches, fried plantains, passion fruit empanadas and fresh juice and shakes for the kids! It was a hotspot for lunch and a lot of fun!
I quickly fell in love with the vibrant murals all throughout the district. Miami is so lively and artistic! These are some of my favorite murals.
It was fun to see "Domino Park" where all the old timers go play dominos all day at different tables. It is loud and serious business playing dominos there! I love this shot of Brielle above outside the park.
Loved walking the streets!
They loved holding the parrots! I guess lots of people have them as pets in the tropics of Florida. It was a fun picture to snap! One of this kids almost got pooped on by the baby parrot. Ha ha!
They spent their own money on Miami hats and amazing mango popsicles. They haven't stopped wearing their hats since! I love that they both picked a hat. So cute!
We were all exhausted by the days end and made it back downtown to our hotel. I am still in awe of the huge Banyan Trees and love the beauty of downtown Miami as well.
